Wayne County Departments and Services
We would like to take the time to familiarize our patients with the services that Wayne County Hospital has to offer. If you have any questions, please contact your nurse or physician.
Departments
Emergency Department
The Wayne County Hospital Emergency Department is equipped with state of the art monitoring and life support equipment. We are a 1st call hospital for Air Evac helicopter service for emergent transportation to any tertiary center in Kentucky or Tennessee. We are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with emergency physicians and nursing personnel. The nursing personnel hold various advance credentials in ACLS, PALS, and CEN. We strive to attain our goal of rapid assessment and treatment while monitoring a balance in accordance with the urgency of the situation.
Health Information Management
The Health Information Management Department (HIM) is staffed with experienced individuals who strive to maintain and keep the quality of patient information at all times. The HIM department is responsible for maintaining the health record for each patient, detailing the course of hospitalization with constant focus on patient confidentiality and privacy at all times. Other responsibilities of the HIM include:
Organization and maintenance of patient information Diagnosis and procedure coding for inpatient and outpatient services Release of patient information as authorized by the patient or as mandated by state and federal guidelines Organizing reviews of patient information to help identify areas of improvement in patient care Reporting of statistical information
Blood Bank
The Blood Bank obtains all blood products from Central Kentucky Blood Center where quality testing on blood is performed to ensure safe products. The Laboratory performs testing on the patient's blood to ensure compatibility of the patient's blood type prior to the administration of the blood products.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredits the Laboratory, every two years. Cap's accreditation program is recognized as a leader in laboratory quality assurance.
Pharmacy
The Wayne County Hospital pharmacy is an up-to date computerized pharmacy staffed with registered pharmacists and certified technicians that specialize in hospital pharmacy care for all ages (newborn through geriatric). The pharmacy department's mission is to help hospital staff, physicians, patients, and their families make the best use of medications. Hospital pharmacists play an important part on the medical team by monitoring medication outcomes and providing drug information to the nurses and medical staff.
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is the evaluation or treatment of individuals for the purpose of preventing, correcting, or alleviating a physical impairment following illness or injury, or for promoting general fitness and well being. Many painful or limiting conditions are treated effectively with various combinations of interventions, incorporating the use of physical therapy often shortens the patient's hospital stay, improves rehabilitation outcomes, and enables individuals to lead more active and independent lives.
Surgery
This area consists of operating rooms well equipped to perform major and minor surgical procedures. The surgical department is staffed with professionally trained personnel to assist the general surgeons. Since procedures and preparation vary with different operations, your physician, anesthetist and the members of the surgery nursing staff will explain in advance what you may expect.
All surgical patients receiving anesthesia will be placed in the post-anesthesia care unit. Family members and visitors of patients who are in surgery may wait in the surgery waiting room located directly outside the surgery department. Relatives will be notified when the patient has been received into the post-anesthesia care unit. The length of time spent in the post-anesthesia care unit varies with each person and procedure.
Services
Dietetics
There is a Registered Dietitian on staff, which can provide you with any education involving your meal plan or nutritional needs. A representative fro the Food and Nutritional services is also available for obtaining food preferences and requests.
There will be some snacks and beverages located at the nursing station for patients. These items can be provided by the Nursing personnel upon request.
Cafeteria
The hospital cafeteria is open for the public and your family and guests. Hours are as follows:
7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Environmental Services
Our housekeeping staff is always working to make your room clean and comfortable, they work as quickly and quietly as possible to get their job done. The Infection Control Committee whose decisions are guided from the Center for Disease Control, (CDC) words closely with the Environmental Service Manager for all policies related to the cleaning procedures of the is hospital. If you have any problems concerning the cleanliness of your room, please contact the Director of Environmental Services at Extension 3221.
Lost and Found
Lost and found items will be turned into the front desk where they may be identified and claimed. To call about lost items, please call 348-9343 or call Extension 3209.
Laboratory Services
Registered laboratory technicians and technologists that are under the direction of an independent Pathologist, staff the Laboratory. This department is responsible for conducting various blood, urine and other body fluid tests ordered by the patient's physician for quality continued care and diagnosis of the patient. If surgery is conducted, the pathologists will examine the removed tissue to determine the nature of the illness.
Nursing Service
The Wayne County Hospital Nursing Staff believes that you, the patient, deserve the very best of care. Special attention comes from your nurses who will provide for your individualized care. WE strive to provide quality-nursing care through a credentialed staff of Rn's, LPN's and CNA's.
In addition, we provide a teaching environment for students in the area health science programs, who may also be a part of your health care team. A registered nurse is responsible for planning your nursing care from the time you arrive until the time you leave. The nurse and your physician, together with you and your family, plan care to meet your nursing and medical needs, which include any necessary education needed for your continuing care after discharge.
Swing Bed Program
The Federal Government, through the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1980, Public Law 96-499, provides that certain rural general hospitals of less than 100 beds, may be designated for "Swing Beds". The primary objective of the Swing Bed Program is to provide short-term, temporary placement for the patient who requires a skilled level of nursing care until (1) The patient has reached the maximal level of functioning, or (2) a more appropriate setting for the patient's care is found.
