Wayne County Hospital surgical department provides quality patient care to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients. These services include inpatient and outpatient services. The surgery department provides general surgery, endoscopy and ophthalmology services.
Endoscopy procedures include colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy and esophagoscopy with ablation. Colonoscopy is direct visualization of the large colon and is a valuable tool to screen for colon cancer. Colorectal screening guidelines recommend a screening at age 50. A colonoscopy may be recommended before age 50, if the patient has a family history of colon cancer or has symptoms. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is visualization of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. It is a valuable diagnostic/screening procedure. Barrett’s esophagus is a diagnosis of pre-cancerous cells of the esophagus. Treatment for Barrett’s esophagus is ablation of these cells, dietary alterations and medications.
The surgery department also provides ophthalmology services. This care, which is provided by ophthalmologist, includes removal of cataracts with lens implants, excisions of minor lesions involving the eye and Yag laser. This provides residents with valuable service as patients do not have to travel out of town for this care.
